Dragon fruit : A boon for dry land farming
Pavankumar Basappa Rangatti from Ratnapur village, Tikota taluk, Vijayapur district aged 21 years is a young graduate hailing from Ratnapur village, Tikota taluk, Vijayapur district. Being the only son, he did not want to leave his parents alone. After his graduation he was in dilemma regarding profession to be taken up. Browsing through the newspapers, he read about the training to be conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Vijayapura for individuals aged below 35 years on organic farming. While attending the training he realized the importance of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry and organic farming. He expressed his interest to do profession which needs less maintenance and less consumption of water as Vijayapur is a dry land area. KVK scientist technically guided him to venture upon dragon fruit which had just emerged in the market. He browsed the internet regarding dragon fruit and brought the saplings from Maharashtra. He brought both white and red varieties of dragon fruit and took the risk of planting them in his 2 acres of land in the year 2017. Earlier his father was growing grape which was a costly affair. Looking into the expenses on grapes his father too supported him in his new venture.
He planted 4000 saplings in 2 acres of land both white and red varieties and harvested the fruits after one and half years. He sells the fruits at the rate of 150-180 rupees per Kg and sapling at the rate of 20 rupees per sapling. In eighteen months he earned 1.25 lakhs by spending 3 lakhs. Gradually, his profit increased to 3.80 lakhs in second year, 6 lakhs in third and 8 lakhs in fourth year by selling the fruits. From the sale of saplings he has earned 3 lakhs. Recently just in three days he has earned 2 lakh rupees profit. Looking in to the profit and realizing the importance of dragon fruit farmers of different taluks and districts from surrounding areas like Muddebihal, Torvi, Atalatti, Nidgundi, Dhavalgi, Hoskote, Kadur have purchased seedlings from him and started dragon fruit farming. Daily on an average there are 20-30 visitors to his farm during the season. He has spent 3 lakhs in the beginning and as on today he has earned a net profit of 11 lakhs and is very much confident of earning higher profits in future too. Dairy farming : A Source of livelihood for young farmer
In today’s society where parents want their children to become e ngineers and doctors, here is a parent who wants his children to do agriculture. Though both of his sons have completed their diplomas, the parent wants his children to look after their ancestral property. Manju Pujari from Muttagi village, B.Bagewadi taluk, Vijayapur district was just 19 years old when he entered into agriculture. Children of this age are still dependent on their parents for everything and are busy with their mobiles. But Manju is a dedicated agripreneur who is always engrossed in the field work. He has 6 acres of land where in he is maintaining dairy, poultry, goatry, fodder, coconut, drumstick, guava, maize, & cowpea .
In the year 2017, he started dairy with two animals. He attended training on dairy conducted by KVK Vijayapur for technical knowledge. Later two of his family members who are also of the similar age attended 21 days vocational training programme on dairy entrepreneur conducted by KVK, Vijayapur. He also took technical inputs under front line demonstrations on poultry, fodder and technical guidance for goat rearing and started these units. Under dairy unit, he has local and HF breeds. They are 22 in number and give a yield of 100 liters per day which he is supplying to dairy @ 25 rupees per liter. He is earning a net profit of 50,000 rupees per month. The cowdung and urine are used for the field as manure. He has one male cattle which he is using for insemination purpose @ 500 rupees at one time which is earning him good income. Added to this, he is earning an amount of Rs. 60,000 per year from sale of fodder eye buds of COFS-29. Under goatry component he has 18 goats and 10 kids. He is earning Rs.85000/- per year from this component. From poultry, he is earning Rs.4000 per month wherein he is selling birds as well as eggs. An income of Rs.6000 per month is earned from sale of coconut. Whatever income is being earned is reinvested for the development activities of his farm. He has spent 8-9 lakhs from the year 2017 for establishment of different units and at present reaping the profits. He has earned a net profit of 3 lakhs during 2020-21. Integrated farming for livelihood security: A success story

Hunnu chavan hails from Arkeri village, Vijayapur district. Earlier he was growing only cereal crops and facing losses when there were no rains. He was one of the members in an NGO and attended collaborative trainings conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Vijayapur wherein he got information on integrated farming system. By taking the technical guidance and also inputs under front line demonstrations provided by KVK scientists he started diversification in his farming. He started different components such as dairy, poultry, goatry, fisheries, sericulture, horticulture along with annual crops under dairy component he has murrah and Gir breeds. He sells milk and butter and earns monthly income of Rs.30000/-. Under goatry component, he has shirohi and osmanabadi breeds. In a span of 3 years he has earned 6 lakhs. Under poultry he has 100 birds of local & swarandhara breeds. He sells the birds and also eggs. He is earning one lakh per year by this component. Under fisheries component, he earns one lakh per year by rearing it in farm pond. Under horticulture component he has grown guava, fig, papaya, coconut, curry leaf and drumstick. He earns 70-80 thousand per year. He also grows fodder to feed his cattle. He sells water and earns 40-50 thousand per year. He has kitchen garden and uses the vegetables for home purpose. He expresses that he earns a net profit of 6-7 lakhs per year from 3.5 acres of land by following integrated farming system.

- Backgound: Smt. Prema Bhosale residing at Hitnalli, Tq: Vijaypur, Dt: Vijaypur is 33 years old and has studied up to PUC II year. She belongs to general category and she lives in a small family with family size of four. Her husband runs a dhaba. She has two children. She is slightly physically challenged but it has not hindered her progress.
- Intervention Process: We say we are modernized but the situation in rural areas is the same as it was forty years back. Women are not allowed to go outside the village and the family members are not ready to spend on her expenses as they think it is a waste of money. Hence Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Vijaypur planned for such an entrepreneurial activity for the women of rural areas where the women can earn income by staying at home itself i.e tailoring along with looking after her family and doing other household chores. Nearly 160 women were trained in tailoring from 2011-14 and Smt. Prema Bhosale is one among them.
- Intervention Technology: Skill of stitching in tailoring.
- Impact Horizontal Spread: Looking at the success of Smt.Prema Bhosale, the family members have understood the importance of women in the family as they are also capable of contributing to the family income and sometimes in times of financial crisis they can become the backbone to the family. Looking at her success, the villagers are sending their adolescent girls and school dropouts for the training on tailoring. Nearly 160 women have been trained in tailoring from 2011-14 and it has been found from the survey that nearly fifty percent of them have started their own enterprise. Ten percent of them are earning monthly income of Rs. 2000/- and below per month. Thirty five percent of them are earning between 2000/- to 5000/- per month and five percent of them are earning an income of Rs.5000/- and above.
- Impact Economic Gains: Smt. Prema Bhosale was earning Rs.3000/- per month prior to training but after receiving the training, her monthly income has gradually increased to 12000/- to 15000/- per month. With the earned income, she has contributed some part of her earnings towards the payment of loan of Rs. 1,00,000/-. She has also contributed towards the renovation of her house. She has purchased a new sewing machine by replacing the old one. She has purchased 4 tolas of gold and at present she has a saving of Rs. 50,000/- which she is planning to pay towards the coaching fees of her son.
- Impact on Employment Generation: In times of more work load, she is hiring another trainees of our KVK and also giving them the opportunity to earn income. In this manner she is generating employment for other women.
